Telling the stories of ordinary human beings
This Is Water is an essay by David Foster Wallace about our awareness of our own reality and the difficulty we have as human beings to feel empathy. The most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about. We need to be aware enough to give ourselves a choice to look differently at people and their situation in order to empathise with them. The only real truth is our choice on how we interact with our world and the people in it and the fact that we get to decide what has meaning and what doesn't. Wallace’s essay inspired me to start telling the stories of ordinary people who make a real difference in their own way. I’d like to share with you a few of those stories as they have such a meaningful impact on the people around them.
